Neris is not a mermaid. Sure, maybe the upper half of her body makes you think that, but what’s underneath the water is the other half of a beast. Her lower half, the tentacles, are olive green in color, and quite dangerous. Long, black hair, crusted with sea salt, drapes her thin frame and bony shoulders, with grey/hazel eyes popping out from behind strands of hair. If she took better care of herself, like a mermaid did, she’d be stunning. But no more of that. She won’t ever do that again. Not after him, them. He broke her to where she doesn’t want that.
The man had been a sailor, and had only seen her upper half. He thought she was a mermaid. They’d talk, and talk, until one day, he saw the tentacles. He freaked out, and tried to kill her. His whole crew, tried to kill her. Neris had had no intentions but talking, and maybe taking the man for her own, now, they were trying to kill her. They threw words her way, like Beast, Monster. Neris escaped, but with the help of two other cecaelia, she sank the ship, and killed all the passengers either by strangling or drowning them. That day, she learned her lesson, never go for a human. They’re only meant for killing, and for taking things from.
Like many cecaelia, Neris is very selfish. Whenever sailors come through the strait that she lives in, she gives them a choice: either give her something of value, or die. She’s gotten quite a few lives from it, enough to give her a substantial ranking, and tends to keep it that way. Sometimes, she pretends to be a drowning woman that way sailors feel pity, and go to “help” her. That’s how she gets them out of their safe zone, and into the water to kill them.
Another trait that Neris has is her demanding attitude. If she wants something, she WANTS it. No questions asked. If a ship has something she wants, either it’s given, or she takes it forcefully. The kill rate doesn’t matter to her, as long as she can get what she wants. In times of crisis, and you’re in the strait that she lives in? Give her what she wants, or face her wrath. Neris lives with a few other cecaelia, and they can, and will, kill for what they want. There is a large area of the strait that works as something as a cave/cove, where they keep their treasures. It’s enough to make any pirate drool. And on occasion, they’ll keep humans there for entertainment.
One of her favorite hobbies, is breaking things. Hearts, boats, anything. She’s broken, and would like nothing more than the rest of the world to be broken with her. That way, she feels better about herself. Deep down, Neris wants someone to want her, have the selfishness be reversed. She wants someone to want her, more than anything. Of course, she hasn’t gotten her hopes up on that happening anytime in the future.
