Ada was the eldest daughter of the Roche family. Her father was a blacksmith in an English settlement in the Caribbean. She was raised with the message that pirates were filthy scoundrels that deserved their hangings, which she observed often with her parents, younger brother, and younger sister. But somehow, she was never able to accept this. She found the idea wrong. That no one could deserve to be hung. She instead got the idea that pirates must be bad, but not as much as everyone else said. Given the environment she lived in, however, she kept these thoughts to herself.
Upon turning twelve, a strange ship docked at the small port early in the evening of a summer's day. Ada had turned to her mother upon seeing the vessel and asked, "What is that ship doing here? It doesn't look like any of the others." The difference was the Jolly Roger. By the time the night was fully upon the little island, it had been overrun with pirates. Ada's parents were taken out of their home by a brutish-looking man, leaving her alone to try and defend her younger siblings, Jack and Victoria (who was only two years old). When the man came back in–most likely just finished with her parents–she threw herself between him and her siblings and offered a trade: a servant or slave for the spared lives of Jack and Victoria.
The deal was accepted, and Ada only had a few scant seconds to assure Jack that she would be fine and that she would find her way back, then to give him instruction to keep Victoria safe. As she was torn away and pulled from her home, she looked back over her shoulder and shouted "I will come back!" to him…but she didn't believe it herself.
Two years of servitude and abuse later, Ada was ditched on Tortuga. She tried to find work with other crews, but was turned away every time for being a woman. After deliberation with herself she decided that if she wanted to make it home, she would either have to result to prostitution to pay her way back…or she would have to disguise herself as a boy and get onto a ship. Obviously, she chose the latter. She cut her hair, dressed in baggy clothes, and used bandages to flatten down her chest, then called herself Adam (a combination of her name and the first initial of her middle name, Morticia). Unfortunately, she couldn't pass as a boy her age, so she claimed to be thirteen to explain her higher pitched voice. After another year of attempts, Ada(m) is still searching for a crew to join while keeping her true gender under wraps (no pun intended).
Ada is the type of person who will stick by her loved ones and stay loyal through the very end. Breaking promises makes her physically ill…so did lying, until she started pretending to be a boy. She's also very compassionate and empathetic, being an older sister. Her high energy can be a bit annoying, but only really manifests when she's really excited about something.
